Does appear to be a corset maker. In response to: I am researching a family living in Bettisfield 1851/61. Female occupation on census shown as 'staymaker'. Not one I have encountered previously. Scrolling through the census, I notice that there were quite a few staymakers (females) in Bettisfield. Can anyone suggest what the job was please and why in Bettisfield? I find it difficult to understand why in a rural village making corsets (if thats what it was connected with) should be a local industry. Or something else perhaps connected to the canal? Thanks for any suggestions.
