Thank you both. Any ideas on why a cluster in Bettisfield? I assume homewokers in this small township. (Am sure my granny told me they were made from whale bone strange location for this occupation). In response to: Hello David I had a distant relative who was a staymaker in the late 1940's until more comfortable alternatives became available like the 'Little X' from Silhouette in Shrewsbury. Female occupation on census shown as 'staymaker'. Not one I have encountered previously. Scrolling through the census, I notice that there were quite a few staymakers (females) in Bettisfield. Can anyone suggest what the job was please and why in Bettisfield? I find it difficult to understand why in a rural village making corsets (if thats what it was connected with) should be a local industry. Or something else perhaps connected to the canal? Thanks for any suggestions.
