As well as the Short Certificate you may come across a 'Certificate of Registry of Birth' which only gives the name of the child and dates of birth and registration together with the Registration District. The one I have is from 1910 and in this case there was nothing to hide.

Not only the use of a fictitious address to conceal a birth in a 'Workhouse' but often a 'Short birth Certificate' would be obtained.
The 'Short Certificate' only states:-
Name and Surname of child........
Sex.............
Date of Birth............
Place of Birth, as Registration District and Sub-district...........
Registrars name signature and date registered.....
Not even Mother or Fathers name appears on this type of certificate.
If you have one of these for a family member you can still obtain a 'Full Certificate' if you so wish.
It will give you Mothers name, also maiden name
 and occupation, actual birth address would still more than likely be fictitious.
