Perhaps Helen may say whether this is a correct surmise: her interest is in the family of John "Ascroft" who is in 1881 Census at 18, Edgar Street, Litherland, Lancs (who was then a stonemason aged 51, born in Ormskirk) and his wife Matilda (who was then aged 44, born in "Colehan", Shropshire - per Family Search transcription); and that she has been unable to find their marriage, and thereby Matilda's earlier surname; thus leading to the partially anonymous posting here. In fact a marriage of John Robert Ashcroft and Matilda Elizabeth Ledson is in FreeBMD for June quarter 1858 in West Derby District, ie right area for Litherland. Am not able at home to pursue this couple under either spelling of surname in earlier or later Censuses, or Matilda properly before that marriage, if it is the correct one; but there is an indication in accessible indices of Ancestry of one Matilda Ledson in Lancs born about 1833. One question is whether that birthplace of "Colehan" / Coleham, or even Shrewsbury is repeated before or after 1881. There is only one Matilda bap in St Julian's, Shrewsbury (the parish then containing Coleham) 1836/40 and she not Ledson. All baps for St Julian's from 1813 to at least 1837 are in IGI; but not all four other Shrewsbury parishes are covered (leaving aside any question of nonconformily). No bap for Matilda Ledson anywhere in IGI for a long span; but then after 1812 coverage is thin.
