I am in fact posting as my e mails are down and it is probably a matter of general interest. In relation to my query and Mikes response about workhouse addresses and whether they were fictitious or had some element of truth in fact I have been today to a family history day. One of the speakers was the owner of the Workhouse website, author and historian. I asked him about the workhouse addresses. In fact what I had surmised was correct in that Some workhouse addresses are entirely fictitious Some have an element of truth e.g. the old Bury workhouse is on Rochdale Old Road but part of it borders onto Broad Oak Lane. Sometimes the address given is not that of the main entrance to the institution but a side street. Some are the actual address of the workhouse, for example Liverpool Workhouse or the real address where a workhouse was, say on Straight Street between numbers 234 and 238 the workhouse address for the purpose of the address of a birth would become 236. He did know about Market Drayton being Common Edge, a fictitious address but indicating a location. In response to: Hello Christine I don't have any documentary information (certificates) about any of the Shropshire Workhouses. I am only posting information from local knowledge and sources I have at home. In the case of Bishop's Castle I was aware that the name Stone House was still in use and in fact it is a care home in Union Street. The photograph on their web site is clearly not the old Workhouse and a quick phone call confirmed the care home is built on the site of the old workhouse which was completely demolished about the 1960's. Mike _____________________________________ In response to: Hi Mike, Was the address a real or fictitious address do you know in relation to my postings below. The problem is of course that they won't be found on Google. www.workhouses.org.uk ask 'If you have discovered (e.g. from a post-1904 birth or death certificate) the pseudonymous address of any workhouse, please get in touch to add the details to the collection below. Please include the complete address (e.g. '22 High Street, Upper Ramsgate' rather than just the street bit e.g. '22 High Street'). Thank you!' This is a useful and informative site but has no Shropshire workhouse 'addresses' so may I suggest that a bit of giving of information might be in order! In response to: Thank you Michael, never thought but I could have looked it up on 'Google Earth' I use this site a lot when looking for places or an address. Wills.
