Thank you to everyone who has contributed in helping me to establish Matilda's of Coleham's identity. I am a novice in family history research and I never cease to be amazed at the ability of those who are experienced. My apologies for not posting sufficient information. The Matilda I was seeking was indeed the wife of John Ascroft of Litherland and is therefore Matilda Elizabeth Ledson. My thanks again, Helen Moller In response to: Bits more. Firstly, to correct my last para above there is a bap of a Matilda Ledson in IGI Lancs in 1833. Next, John and Matilda ASCROFT had with them in 1881 a 7 month old grandson John W Goldrick, born Litherland. His birth as John Watson Goldrick is in FreeBMD for September quarter 1880 in West Derby. Next, a search of alternative spellings produces the marriage of James Watson Goldrick and Ellen ASHCROFT in June q 1879 in West Derby. Next, in 1881 Ellen Goldrick is seen as servant to Robt P Clegg, a provision merchant aged 33 in Great Crosby (close to Litherland), she married, aged 20, born in SHREWSBURY. Next, Ellen ASCROFT born June quarter 1860 in Shrewsbury - GRO ref 6a 620. One might surmise that all this fits and that Matilda went back to her mother for birth of (query) first child. (At least two other presumed children of John and Matilda, such as Emily, are in FreeBMD in West Derby as ASCROFT). If indeed, pending Helen's comment, this is the right family one would suggest that she needs to buy the birth certificate for Ellen born in Shrewsbury, as this will, or ought, to give the mother's maiden surname. A search for any bap for Ellen would be time consuming with many more parishes in Shrewsbury by 1860, and Holy Trinity (for Coleham) being a health-and-safety issue for one's neck as fiches were filmed at rightangles; apart from which mother's surname would not (normallly) be given.
