For your Information: I have managed to locate the As(h)croft family in earlier Census. There are infact two daughters born in Shrewsbury: Ann M. E. As(h)croft b. 1858 and Ellen As(h)croft b. 1860. As you thought, it appears Matilda went home to Shrewsbury for the birth of her first two children, although I have no further information of Matilda herself. Thank you for your help. Regards Helen In response to: Emily As(h)croft married into a French family of Merchants called Sohege/Ludolphi from Hamburg who married in Sheffield and settled in Liverpool. These people are the ancestors of my late friend's son for whom I am doing this research. Emily appears to be in the 1881/1891/1901 Census but I could only find Matilda in the 1881; I think I will go over this work again to be sure. The As(h)crofts are numerous on the Lancashire plain. I think perhaps the only way to establish Matilda's identity beyond doubt is as you suggest, with the birth certificate for Ellen. Regards Helen In response to: Iwould still recommend that you buy the birth cert for Ellen ASCROFT, born in Shrewsbury in 1860 to be sure of the mother's maiden surname. LEDSON is unknown to the IGI for Salop apart from a very late private entry for a marriage in 1854. The only bap in St Julian's of a Matilda between 1.1.1836 and 31.12.1841 was 29.5.1836 (born 7.5.1836 - noted in the baptismal register) Matilda, daughter of Thomas and Ann Maria Williams, Coleham, soapmaker. This, I later saw, is in IGI; and indeed all baps for St J between 1813 and at least 1837 are in IGI. You can search forenames only for a span of years (not possible for surnames which you can search only for all periods). It might well be that Mrs Matilda Ascroft / Ashcroft gave other ages or places of birth at other Censuses. That apart,
