(PS - pleased for L - have seen HJ) In response to: Perhaps, David, it might be worthwhile researching (eg online) what stays were made of before Captain Ahab and Co were in business. Something "vegetable" as opposed to "animal"? And was that raw material in abundance in the Bettisfield / Fenns Moss area? Might flax come into it? Basket-making, to draw a parallel, was traditional at Uffington, which you will know well. (PS my sister has at long last just retired from teaching; and Hazel J is planning to move back to Shropshire from N Yorks).
