Shropshire FHS Apr 2018 Monthly Meeting

Tue, 17/04/2018 - 19:00

Subject - "A Shropshire Squire: “Mad Jack” Mytton of Halston 1796-1834”
Speaker - David Thornycroft
Venue - The Old Chapel Community Centre, Cross Houses, Nr Shrewsbury SY5 6JH

Col (Retd) David Thornycroft OBE was educated at Shrewsbury School and Trinity College, Oxford, where he took a History degree. He served for 34 years as an officer in The Black Watch. Now that he is retired, he combines those two interests by reading (a lot), and writing and lecturing (a little), mostly about military history.

“Mad Jack” Mytton of Halston, near Oswestry was pre-eminent amongst the “eccentric squires” of Georgian England, who became notorious for their hard riding and hard drinking. David Thornycroft’s talk draws from the colourful episodes of his ancestor’s brief and disreputable life to illustrate the dramatic changes taking place in the early years of the nineteenth century to agriculture, education, the Army, politics and sport, which together changed the society and landscape of Shropshire, and in some cases England, for ever.
