‘Around Shrewsbury’ has been taken as the area of the, possibly late lamented Shrewsbury and Atcham Borough Council and parts adjoining its Western borders, it can be more precisely defined geologically as the Shrewsbury Coalfields (Dryton, Hanwood and Leebotwood) and the South West Shropshire Orefield where lead, zinc and barites etc. Were mined.
Reference will be included to the people involved, mainly men but including A few women from Alice Maydins(c1400) to Elizabeth Smallshaw (who died 1913) who ran coal mines.
