Shropshire FHS June 2016 Monthly Meeting

Tue, 21/06/2016 - 19:00

Subject - "John Rhydderch (1675-1735): a Welshman in Shrewsbury"
Speaker - Stephen Jones
Venue - The Old Chapel Community Centre, Cross Houses, Nr Shrewsbury SY5 6JH

John Rhydderch was an early 18th century Shrewsbury printer and much else besides: antiquary, astrologer, genealogist, grammarian, lexicographer, poet, translator, and, it has been claimed, musician, as well as one of those who brought the eisteddfod into the modern era. His own ancestry presents a fascinating exercise in genealogical research. The talk takes a close look at his birth and parentage, and goes on to discuss his wider pedigree. It takes in a general look at his time in Shrewsbury, and ends with an interesting incident from his life.
