Shropshire FHS May 2014 Monthly Meeting

Tue, 20/05/2014 - 19:00

Venue - The Shirehall, Abbey Foregate, Shrewsbury SY2 6ND
Subject - "English or Welsh History: what’s the difference?
"
Speaker - Andrew Grierson

In early 2013 he, as part of Universirty of Sheffield, carried out DNA sampling of men in Shrewsbury and Meifod (Powys). Although less than 20 miles apart the sampling areas span the Welsh border, which represents a cultural and linguistic border since at least the reign of Offa in 796.
The goal of this research was to ask whether the Welsh border has had a long-lasting effect on the populations of Powys and Shropshire. He will describe the uses of genetics for investigating historical populations, and present the results of our investigation.
