In the eighteenth century the medical profession was beginning to be recognised as a professional body, but faced competition from a variety of more or less well-meaning quacks and mountebanks. Shropshire is notable for founding one of the very first Voluntary Subscription Hospitals, in 1747, which offered both in-patient and out-patient care to ‘proper objects of charity’, that is those who were neither paupers nor rich enough to pay for their own care. A long campaign began for legal recognition of the profession and the suppression of unqualified quacks, in which Shropshire doctors played a significant part. The talk will also touch on some of the more interesting, colourful or scandalous characters and events.
