Can anyone please help me?
I am trying to find 3 sets of families on the 1861 census for the Worthen, Shropshire area.
I have searched both England and Wales for there names, I have searched Worthen, etc and no joy.
Is the census returns for this area missing?
My ancestors all lived in Bent Lont, Hope and The Gravels Worthen and I have them in the 1851 census and the 1871 census living in the same area so they never moved out.
I am looking for
1861 Census
Ann Swain born Worthen 1804
John Swain born Worthen 1845 son of the above
1861 Census
Benjamin Sockett Wellington 1804
Mary Socket Worthen 1842 daughter of the above
1861 Census
Richard Howells Worthen 1816
Martha Howells Malpas Cheshire 1812 wife
Ann Howells Worthen 1848 daughter
Sarah Howells Worthen 1851 daughter
Margerat Howells Worthen 1854 daughter
Emma Howells Worthen 1858 daughter
Any help with this would really be appreicated
Thanks
Fiona
Thank you so much for this, it explains so much and the reason why I cannot find them. Its a shame though as this is some of the period which would also help and confirm some deaths for me
Oh well, I will have to show it under these persons as missing census with what you have put and then it helps to ensure dont forget and try to pick it up again
Thank you again
Fiona
Hello Fiona
Unfortunately part of the Worthen section of the 1861 census has not survived in The National Archives collections. The Ancestry web site does have a list of missing pieces at the bottom of this page including the missing Worthen piece RG.9/4256
Below is a list of the piece and folio numbers which cover Worthen
4255 Chirbury 1r - 53r
Worthen 54r - 59v
4255 Worthen 60r - 79v
4256 Worthen 1r - 1v
(RG9/4256 incomplete at PRO)
4257 Worthen 1r - 21v
If you search by the piece numbers and then look through the page images one by one you should be able to work out if the area where your family was living in 1851 and 1871 is missing from 1861.
