Hi, can anyone tell me anything about Bayston Hall? An ancestor was servant there in 1825, where she had an illegitimate child. Such as where it was/is and generally anything about it.

Thanks

Molly

Hello Molly

There is a village called Bayston Hill (not Hall) just south of Shrewsbury so I am wondering if this is where your ancestor was born.

Presumably you have obtained this information from a parish register. If you tell us the childs name and date and place of baptism we may be able to look up the entry to see if that gives any clues.

Hi Mike

All I know is that Ann who spelt her name THOMBLIN, had an illegitimate daughter baptised in Condover in 1825. She was down as Elizabeth THROMBLIN on marriage to Richard DAVIES.  It said, Ann was a servant at Bayston Hill (must have been). Is that near Pontesford/Pontesbury?

Thanks

Molly

Hello Molly

I am struggling with this at the moment.

Having looked through the Condover Baptism Register for 1825 I can't see an entry which is anything similar to the details you have given.

I have also search for the Marriage you mention but at the moment I can't find that. I am guessing the marriage was at Pontesbury?

What is the source of your information for the baptism and marriage?

Mike

Elizabeth THOMBLIN married Richard DAVIES 1850 registry office in Atcham. I have the marriage cert for that.  Although Ann, the mother, was born in Pontesbury, as was Richard and his father William, they were blacksmiths.

It was familysearch.org that i got the baptism from saying Elizabeth 1825 in Condover, illegitimate child of Ann a servant from Bayston Hill.

Hello Molly

You say that you have the Marriage Certificate - please have another look at it because the Civil Registration index gives the husbands forename as Robert (not Richard) and that is why I couldn't find it a few days ago.  By the way, Atcham was the name of the Registration District but the Registrars Office will have been somewhere in Shrewsbury. Atcham is also a parish.

The only Baptism I can find similar to yours on Family Search and in the original Condover Baptism Register is for Elizabeth TOMLINE (or TOMLINS) (no H after the T) Baptised on 6 December 1829 (not 1825) Illegitimate daughter of Anne TOMLINE (or TOMLINS) of Bayston Hill Servant.

Hi Mike

Yes it is Richard DAVIES, Elizabeth was living in Frankwell at the time.  Her marriage cert shows her as THROMBLIN.  I know she was born in Condover but her mother (who is shown living with Richard and Elizabeth) in 1851 as being born in Pontesbury.  there is no mention of a father ont he wedding cert.  although again Ann, the mother seems to be quite old.  I can find no mention of Elizabeth in 1841.  it is definately Richard and not Robert, I have a family bible showing that and the marriage cert shows Richard.

thanks

Hi Mike

I did as you suggested and went home and checked the marriage c ert and WOW a million apologies.  John EVANS married Elizabeth THROMBLIN March 1850 at the registry office, although they lived in Pontesbury. They went on have a son Sam who married Eliza DAVIES whose mom and dad were Richard DAVIES Blacksmith and Ann BLOWER.  So sorry I was trying to find something out about Elizabeth, think there are different spellings of the name. She was illegitimate and was born in Condover although her mom Ann was born in Pontesbury.

So sorry again Mike

Hi all and thanks for e mail Mike

I think we can safely say this shropshire lass has lost the plot!! lol

what I am trying to do is find something out about Ann (although there seems to be variations of her name) I cant find anything about her or daughter elizabeth in 1841, nor any parish records for anne in pontesford.

that was my main question to start with when I thought Bayston was a hall (not hill) and thought there might be servants records.  I have now found Bayston Hill on the map.  will try and research the Tomlin's i n condover as obviously anne went to a relatives to have her baby..

any help gratefully received (promise to write it down and not store in memory, as that seems to be letting me down).
