I am researching the history of Besford House in Trinity Street.
I would like to find out:
(a) When did it stop being a Children's Home and become admin. offices?
(b) Who were the Superintendents after Albert BOLTON 'resigned' in 1953.

Yes I have been through the Superintendents' Journals in the Archives - which end in 1953 with Bolton unfortunately.
Newspapers for the time are rather a 'needle in a haystack' exercise as I have rather a long time frame to cover - from the mid 1950s and possibly into the 1970s.
I thought that I might need to ask if someone in Social Services has any insight / record.
I have also looked at the website, www.childrenshomes.org
I am nearing the end of my research and am trying to tie up a few loose ends prior to putting together a not for sale booklet on Besford House and the people associated with it.

Hi again Hazel.
I did check the Shrewsbury Chronicle and found articles about the 1976 assault case and the 1991 proposals to close the home. They were flagged up in the indexes. The Superintendent in 1976 was also named. Not quite so much of 'a needle in a haystack' as I imagined.

Good morning Ian,
Have a look at www.childrenshomes.org. It does mention Besford House. Apparently is was a "scattered" home. It also points out that there is the imposition of a 100 year rule on a great deal of the paperwork. Probably worth asking Shropshire Archives what they have on this. Also newspapers of the time and maybe some type of committee papers which may throw further light on the proceedings.
