Hello, I live in Victoria, Australia.  My great grandmother was Maria Grace BINNERSLEY was born 31st Dec 1860 in Shifnal, Shropshire. Maria married George ROWLEY, also born in Shropshire, and their extended family left England and immigrated to Victoria, Australia in 1912 and 1913.   Maria ROWLEY nee BINNERSLEY's father and mother were George and Mary Ann BINNERSLEY nee BURGESS. BUT George's father, (my 3rd great grandfather), was Joseph BILLINGSLY baptised 20th November 1796 at Weston under Lizard.  Researching Baptismal Registers records show that Joseph and Maria BILLINGSLEY had 3 children.  Those children were  - Harriet, Bap. 30th March 1828, George baptised 20th May 1831 and Sarah BILLINGSLEY baptised 1st September 1833.  The children were all baptised in Weston under Lizard, Staffordshire.  However by the 1841 Shifnal census all three children are recorded living with their Uncle William and Maria BINNERSLEY nee CHETTER - so yet another Maria!  William and Maria BILLINGSLEY/BINNERSLEY were married 3rd February in 1823 at Sheriffhales.  (In the 1823 Marriage Register William's surname is spelt "BRINSLEY") However, despite searching for many hours I've been completely unable to find my 3rd great grandparents - Joseph and "Maria" BILLINGSLEY's marriage record.  The BILLINGSLEY/BINNERSLEY name is spelt in so many different ways and although I've tried various different spellings, I'm now absolutely "stumped".  I'd be most grateful,( and absolutely thrilled), if anybody can assist or "shed any light" on this elusive couple?  Thank you, Helen

Hi Helen

I have Billingsley ancestors, although I cannot see a connection with your line at present. But I have a note of Byllyngesleye as a spelling! (Back in the 1500s!). Not sure whether this might be of any help. (My Billingsleys were baptised in Claverley, Shropshire, for several generations.

Happy hunting!

Geoff

Hello Geoff,

Thank you for response to my query and what a shame that I can't see a familial link between our families at present.  "My" Billingsley ancestors, (who eventually became Binnersleys), seem to be found mainly around Shifnal, Ryton in Shifnal, Worfield, Wem and Bridgnorth.  I'll keep looking.

Best wishes, Helen
