Hello,

I am researching the BURY/BERRY family.  In particular looking for the family of my Gt Gt Grandmother Elizabeth BURY/BERRY b 1829 Baschurch, Shropshire.  Her place of birth is consistant on census from 1851 - 1891.  Her father, Edward BURY, according to her marriage cert to Thomas EVANS was a Stonemason.  I have not been able to find any of her family in Shropshire.  I am totally unfamiliar with this area as I have just found the above information.  The 1851 census has her as BERRY and some of the births of her children on GRO has her name as BERRY.  I have looked for both but unable to find anything on her father or family.  Edward would have been born abt 1800.

If there is anyone that can help it would be much appreciated thank you.

Regards

Hello KiwiBarb

All the Shropshire Parish Registers of Baptisms, Marriages and Burials up to 1900 are available on the Find my Past web site (subscription or credits required or try your local library / archive office) but your Elizabeth BERRY / BURY b.1829 does not show up.

I tried looking through the Elizabeth entries in case the surname had been mis-read but that didn't help.  I also looked through the pages of the Baschurch Baptism Register to make sure an entry hadn't been missed.

In the 1851 census Elizabeth had moved to Chester in the county of Cheshire and I presume her marriage was the one at Wrexham in Wales in 1855.  In the 1871 census they were living at Bersham, Denbighshire, Wales and that census shows that three of their children had been born at Chirk in Denbighshire.  They were still living at Bersham in the 1891 census.

I can't offer any suggestion why your Elizabeth might have been born at Baschurch unless it was just a coincidence that her mother happened to be passing through at the time.  To help you a little with the geography it is about 15 miles from Baschurch to Chirk and about 8 miles from Chirk to Bersham which is about 2 miles south west of Wrexham.

I can't help wondering whether you should be concentrating your searches in the Denbighshire records.

Hi Mike,

Thank you for your reply.  Yes, her marriage was at Erbistock in 1855 to Thomas Evans.

The family did live initially in Minera and then moved to Bersham.  Elizabeth died  24 OCT 1898 • Coedpoeth North Wales, Minera.  She is buried in Minera Church with Thomas.  Thomas and Elizabeth are my GG Grandparents.

Like you I have tried FMP to look for info but nothing showed up.

The 1851 census has her as Berry as do some of the GRO birth records for their children.  Possibly moved to Chester with the family she was working for at the time.  I struggle to find her father as well so not sure where to look there now.  I have concentrated on Denbigshire records for the Evans family but with Elizabeths birth place being different thought I would try elsewhere.

I guess just back to the drawing board and look elsewhere for her father and family.

Again thank you.  Not easy working so far away and unfamiliar with the area.  Lots to learn about this area.  Maybe a trip is needed.wink
