Does anyone live in the area of Moreton Corbet. I am looking for the grave of Richard COOPER who died in 1870. He lived in Preston Brockhurst but was buried in MC.

Thanks

Hello Benny

If you go to 'Online Databases' in the blue bar above, then select the top item 'Monumental Inscription' you can enter your surname in the search box.  The resulting entries will show that there are two gravestones at Moreton Corbet with the name COOPER on them.

In your case you need 114 which reads:-
Richard COOPER late of Preston Brockhurst died 19 Sep 1870 aged 60.  Sarah relict of Richard COOPER died 9 Apr 1883 aged 74,  also Mary COOPER died 21 Feb 1925 aged 75.

To find the stone go to the east end of the church then five stones to the south and you should find it.

It would probably be much easier if you purchased a photocopy of the transcript (which includes a copy of the plan) from Shropshire FHS and you would then be able to use the plan to help locate the stone.  To buy a copy go to 'Shop' above and select 'Shropshire FHS Publications Catalogue' which gives you a link to a *.PDF document.

Hello Benny,

On Ancestry there is the National Probate Calendat & this shows Richard died 19th September 1870. On the 1861 he appears to be an Innkeeper on Wyle Cop Shrewsbury and the census gives his place of birth as Camerwell, Staffordshire about 1811. His wife Sarah born Clive, Shropshire. They had 5 children at home as follows : Henry 25 born Birmingham; Edmund 22 born Burslem; Emma 17 born Burslem;Elizabeth16 born Burslaem and Mary 11 born Shrewsbury.

Hope this helps. Hazel

Hi Benny,

I think I was born in the house Richard COOPER had his pub in Preston Brockhurst and I think I also have a copy of his will. Will post more details when (if) I find it.  Also on another post you ask about Hill Farm Grinshill. Thinking about that, but Hill Farm, Clive adjoins Preston Brockhurst. Maybe it was then in Grinshill parish??? Where is the photo you mention posted?

More to follow if I find my papers. Have been collecting info on Preston Brockhurst, Moreton Corbet, Besford for years and would be happy to share, but my filing system is, well, non existent.

Hi again,

I have found some papers.

Richard COOPER was at the Corbet Arms Preston Brockhurst from 1863 to 1877. This is taken from directories, he was not listed in the 1861 one or the 1879 P.O. directory. As he died in 1870 his son must have carried on the business.

The Corbet Arms is nowadays the black and white farmhouse on the A49 in the middle of the village on the western (Grinshill) side of the road. He is also stated to be a maltster and I have photos of the maltings which were right on the side of the road.

Sorry have not found his will.

hope this is of some interest

Hello Jackie

we had an interesting visit to Shrewsbury and Moreton Corbet we found the grave of Richard Cooper in the churchyard near the castle. He must have been a man of note to have quite a large grave stone his wife and daughter are also buried there.

We took a photo of what we thought was the pub.  Do you have an email address so I might send it to you so you can confirm it. What a busy road. We did knock on the door but no one was in.

Thanks again.

Benny

Hi Mike

Thank you so much for the info you gave me back in 2013.  We visited the grave a few weeks ago and my friend was so delighted that he was able to see his Gt grandfathers grave it meant so much to him.  We also I think  found the Moreton Corbet Arms now a house, thanks to Jackie Williams.

Hello I have just joined this forum as I got very excited when I saw this thread about a COOPER of Moreton Corbett. Unfortunately he is not my relative but another Cooper is mentioned in grave no 99. I have added my query onto the end of this thread but will change if not appropriate. I have been researching the Shropshire side of my family for many years off and on. My 3rd Great Grandfather is a Richard Cooper: 1800–1858 BIRTH 1800 • Moreton Corbet, Shropshire, UK DEATH 14 MAR 1858 • Preston Brockhurst, Moreton Corbet, Salop He married Ann Ralphs in 1929 1829. He was a mason/stone cutter. I just wondered if his is the other grave that was mentioned at the beginning of this thread. Many thanks Cathy

Hello Cathy

I have reproduced the transcript from No.99 below but there is clearly a problem with the details for Richard COOPER which I can't explain at the moment but presume the stone was difficult to read.  The details for Annie and Ann fit with the details in the burial register.

99.    [broken] Richard COOPER of Preston Brockhurst died 24 Mar 1857 aged 56,  also Annie COOPER died 24 Jun 1872 aged 26,  also of Ann COOPER re.....[relict of?] above died 29 Apr 1891 aged 87.
[NOTE: Moreton Corbet Burial Register has - Richard COOPER [of] Preston Brockhurst [buried] 19th March 1858 [age] 56 years]

Hello Mike and thank you very much for sending the transcript.  That is very useful and a good start to my search for relatives on this forum. Cathy
