My paternal Grandmother was Sarah CULLIS born March 1881 in Pendlebury Lancashire. Her parents were Richard CULLIS, collier, and Emma, formerly THOMAS. I now know that both the CULLIS and THOMAS families came to work in the collieries in 1860/70s. The THOMAS's were from Bilston but of Welsh origin.

A search of CULLIS origins brought me to Shropshire Family History Family History Discussion where there are a number of posts though from some years ago. It would appear that CULLIS's are from Shropshire /Staffordshire /welsh borders.

Richard CULLIS was 22 years old when he married Emma (18) in Dec. 1880 at Christ Church  Pendlebury. The area of Pendlebury where many  of these mining families settled was known as Little Bilston.

Richard CULLIS Jr. died in 1972 and is buried at Christmas Church Pendlebury. I am not aware of any other CULLIS living in the area.

I would be most interested  to hear from anyone named CULLIS as I try to piece the jigsaw together!.
