Looking for my grandfathers family, my grandfathers name was Harry DAVIES, he had three sisters Mary, Gwen and Margot, and his mothers maiden name was MORGAN.  The DAVIES' and MORGAN families came from Cockshutt and Ellesmere areas. My grandfather died many years ago and my father has only just died, before dad went he wanted to know what happened to them but didn't get his wish, so I'm now doing this in his memory.

Some ideas regarding dates would be helpful if available - any idea roughly when Harry and his sisters were born? Or even when and where Harry passed away, as his death registration should give an age or date of birth. Also did any of them have middle names that you know of?

I have found the following Davies/Morgan children's birth registrations at Ellesmere district, could they be your relatives:

Harry, September quarter 1912.

Harry, December quarter 1912. (Same Harry as registered in the previous quarter?)

Alfred W, March quarter 1916. (Death registered December quarter 1919.)

Mary A, September quarter 1919. (Mary?)

Margaret A Davies, June quarter 1925. (Margot?)

Gwendoline A, September quarter 1926. (Gwen?)

Harry died in 1976 in Ruthin.  I think he was born in 1912,and September sounds about right.  This does sound very promising.  I have no idea of his  parents name, but my grandfather married Hannah DRURY and it would have been in Shropshire.  Thank you very much for this!!!

These should be the right people as grandad had an uncle Alf, that's who Alfred may have been named after, just want to find relatives and a bit about that side of the family, thanks again for your help!

Following on from the above. If the birth registrations I found are the right ones, then the following might be of interest:

The death of Gwendoline Ada Davies, date of birth 16 Jul 1926, was registered Apr 2003 at Wrekin. Almost certainly the Gwendoline in the birth registration above, dying unmarried. Her death certificate would show where she was living, cause of death, and the informant - who may have been a sibling or other relative.

The other siblings could be difficult to trace forwards as their names are less distinctive. There are several people on Genes Reunited who have a Harry Davies born 1912 in Shropshire, bot no-one there seems to have the siblings.

I can't find a death registration for Harry at Ruthin in 1976. The closest match seems to be Harry Davies, death registered at Chester & Ellesmere Port, December quarter 1976, date of birth given as 24 Jun 1912.

A possible marriage of the parents was that of Fred Davies and Mary A Morgan, registered at Ellesmere September quarter 1912 - if this is the right record then Mary was probably 'with child' (just before or after the birth) when she married. There are earlier potential Davies/Morgan marriages (some registered at Oswestry for instance) but with those before the middle of 1911 it isn't always possible to tell which grooms married which brides. But having just done some further research I think I might have the right marriage anyway - it appears that Harry's birth was registered under both surnames in the December quarter of 1912! There is a registration for a Harry Davies (Ellesmere, December quarter, volume 6a, page 1152, mother's maiden name Morgan) and another for a Harry Morgan (Ellesmere, December quarter, volume 6a, page 1152, mother's maiden name Morgan). Either there were two different children and one heck of a coincidence, or a registration under his mother's name prior to the marriage, and an amendment to the registration after the marriage to give Harry his new surname.

The father as Fred maybe right as my father, Harry's son was called Frederick.  The thing is its so hard because grandad never spoke about his family, and MORGAN and DAVIES are common names.  Grandad is buried in a church in Ruthin, North Wales, my Sis has his death cert so will have to look it up.  I just don't know where to go from here.

The next step I would say is to get a copy of that death certificate. It should confirm Harry's date and place birth. I would also, funds permitting, get a copy of Harry and Hannah's marriage certificate (the marriage was registered at Oswestry, March quarter 1934, volume 6a, page 1120). That should name Harry's father and give the father's occupation, which should clarify whether or not I've identified the right marriage record for his parents. This would help to confirm that we have the right family, and that the Davies children whose birth registrations I found are the right ones. Tracing backwards might then be possible (perhaps with the help of Harry's parents' marriage certificate) through census records.

Of course your interest is in tracing forwards - what happened to Harry's siblings? Two we probably know about already - Alfred died aged 3, and Gwen almost certainly died unmarried in 2003. Funds permitting, I would get Gwen's death certificate to see if the informant was a relative; their name and address would be given and that might help to track them down. It might also be worth joining Genes Reunited and paying the basic subscription (quite s small amount, which enables you to make contact with other members), then you could find out whether those with Harry Davies born 1912 in Shropshire in their family trees, are related (and if they are, whether they know anything about Harry's siblings). Assuming the members in question actually reply. A similar thing could be done at Lost Cousins if earlier members of the family can be identified on the 1911 and 1881 censuses; details can be entered online and if anyone else who is a Lost Cousins member has also entered the census details for those people, the match will be flagged up and for a small fee you can make contact.

With firmer information about the people you are looking for and their immediate relatives, you could post messages on other forums such as Rootschat and those attached to the various family history magazines, to see if anyone descended from or related to Harry's siblings spots your message.

One final addition - I've just checked the public member trees at Ancestry. Only one public tree has a Harry Davies born about 1912 in Shropshire, but this one died 24 Jan 1994 at Lilleshall in Shropshire and married a Withington; although there is an exact date and place of death, the exact date and place of birth are not known. This might be the Harry Davies in the Genes Reunited members' trees. This could also be the Harry Davies whose death was registered at Wrekin in May 1994, date of birth 31 Mar 1909. If so the registration of his death was a bit late and his descendant's estimate of his year of birth is a little out.

Ruling potential ancestors out can be quire helpful - saves you from barking up the wrong family tree, so to speak. smiley

Steve

PS - one final, final thing (honest) - if you get Harry and Hannah's marriage certificate, check the witness details in case the witnesses were members of Harry's family.

Unfort it was my father not my grandfathers birth certificate, but have found photos of my grandfathers grave and he died on Nov 16th 1976 aged 64 years.  He was buried at Llanfwrong Church Ruthin.

The date of death and age at death suggest that the death registration for Harry Davies at Chester & Ellesmere Port, December quarter 1976, date of birth given as 24 Jun 1912, is likely to be that of your grandfather. Deaths are registered in the district where they ocurred, which may not necessarily be the same as the one in which the deceased usually resided. The district in which this was registered and the one in which Harry was buried are not far away from each other.

The date of birth from the death registration, if it is the correct one, suggests the correct birth registration for Harry is the one from September quarter 1912, but I suspect that those from the December quarter of that year relating to Harry Davies and Harry Morgan also relate.

If you can afford a few certificates from the GRO, I think it would be worth getting them as per my last but one post.

Good luck!

Have some more information on Mary A MORGANs Family, she had brothers and sisters Harry, William, Alfred, Elsie and Annie.  I have got a picture of one of these Sisters now and unsure if it was Elsie or Annie, they were known as Aunty Nan, I really must get the marriage cert for Frederick and Mary to find out more about him.
