Can anyone let me know who lived in Haughmond Castle in the 1891 and 1901 census, it could be listed as Haughmond Hill Castle, Castle on the Hill or Haughmond Cottage. Thank you

Hello Sandra

You probably need to be looking in Uffington parish (not to be confused with Uppington) but it may just be in Upton Magna parish.

In the 1891 census both parishes are in HO.12/2108. Uffington will be found at RG.12/2108 folio 27 page 1 which is Registration District 351 Atcham, Sub-District 6 Battlefield. There is something strange on Ancestry because I can't bring up anyone in Uffington and I think they have got it confused with Uppington. If you use the reference numbers I have given above (the piece number 2108, folio number 27 and page 1) you should be looking at Uffington and can then work your way through the parish. Find my Past have it listed correctly.

In 1901 Uffington starts at RG.13/2532 folio 55 page 1. There are only 12 pages so it won't take you long to look through them.

Try Nancy Spragge. There is a photo of her in Dr Paul Stamper's "Historic Parks and Gardens of Shropshire", page 88, as a provider of teas for trippers. (Am not subscribed to the pay sites).

Uffington parish, by the way, was long divided into two sections - Uffington and Haughmond Demesne.

Also, by the way, I learned quite recently from an impeccable source that the correct pronunciation is "Haymond".

Thank you Martin,

I have the 1841-1881 census when the Roberts family lived there , under different addresses, Haughmond Hill Cottage, Haughmond Cottage, Castle on the Hill, The Castle. by 1891 the Roberts family had moved to Somerwood. But I do know that a Margaret Roberts was living in the Castle on her own during WW.1

In the 1891 census there is no mention of the Castle, but listed next to Hill Cottage (The Spragg families home) are a family called Jones so I assume they are living in the Castle.

I no longer have access to any of the sites that give me 1901 census returns for the Castle; but previously on the 1901 census for Hill Cottage it gives Ann Spread (The Spraggs real name) age 87 Head - Widow.

I was just wondering if anyone had been luckier than me.

Many years ago I did my best to find out about the families who lived on the Hill, and managed to speak to people who remember the Roberts family and Nancy Spragg.this is where I got my previous information from.

Thanks Sandra. I did later try the "official" 1901 site, index only and can now see why no Spragg / spragge / Sprague appeared in the area.

As regards earlier occupants of the Hill cottage I looked a year or two ago into a family of John Edwards, a gamekeeper, who was there around 1820. Peter Edwards, who is occasionally at Archives is a descendant. Paul Stamper's book, by the way, has a photo of the "castle" in its prime. Also, if you have a wider interest, there is a very unusual local census of about 1821 listing heads of households and a bit more. On, now delicate, paper among the Uffington parochial documents.

Thank you Martin

I will try to look at the 1821 census next time I go to Archives, I have not been for a very long time do not seem to have the time to spare these days, other committments !!!

I do know that William Spragg (Nancy's father in law) & family lived in the cottage from around 1800 so they should have been there then.

I have seen Paul Stampers book with both Nancy & the Castle photographs in it.
