John was my great grandfather. He was born , according to census records, around 1840 in Coreley, Shropshire. In 1861 he married Emma Morris, daughter of James Morris in Stanton Lacy. They had 12 children and the Handley family seemed to have moved around the Shropshire area working on farms. My problem is, I am unable to find any record of John's birth or who his parents were. He died June 1913 in Ludlow. I have only discovered this site today although a member of the society so am hoping someone can advise me what to try next.
I have attached a copy of my findings so far.

Hi Barbara,
I hope the following details maybe of interest, it's so good to see a request on the board that contains so much information and where you have obtained it.
According to the ABSTRACTED entry on the IGI there is a John Han(d)ley Christened on the 15th.Aug.1841 (maybe the entry on the 1841 census should read 3 months not years) and only a mothers name is given, Susan.
If you look at the 1841 census you will find Susan living with her parents at Corley as unmarried !!
Gulielmus.
Hello William. I too wondered if the 1841 Census should read "3 months"; but searching FreeBMD 1838/41 inclusive under HANDLEY and HANLEY produces only (unnamed) male HANDLEY registered Dec quarter 1838 in Cleobury Mortimer District, which inclded Coreley.
Yes Martyn what took you so long?
Thank you all for your replies. I just came across them as I thought I would be notified of any responses so I hadn't checked back earlier. It all seems to be relevant to my great grandfather. I did not realise the relationship between Cleobury Mortimer and Coreley before so it all makes sense. I do wonder if any of the Handley line are still in Shropshire but that will be for another day I suppose.
Thanks again, Barbara Handley
Hi Barbara,
I too, have recently started my family tree and happened to stumble across your request for information. It turns out that your John Handley is also my great grand father. His daughter, Alice is my paternal grand mother and she lived here in Australia. She came out to Australia in 1909 with husband George and three of her children. My father Eric and three other siblings were born in Australia.
Hopefully you will see this message.
Chris
Firstly thank you to Michael for phoning me to let me know about this posting.
I do actually know about Alice Snelling nee Handley who died in Australia in 1964. I am in contact with her grand daughter Shirley nee Snelling. Are you Christopher who I am also aware of ? I think you are the same generation as Shirley. Obviously I do not wish to post much detail about your family here. I do have a family tree on Ancestry.co.uk. I would love to hear more from you. I am not sure if I am allowed to give you my personal email address here but will try and pass it to you through this site.
Michael, How can I pass my email address onto Golden Pines?
I look forward to hearing from you again.
Barbara
