Hello  I am trying to find out more about John Poyner & Hannah Matthews who married at Claverley 1/5/1800. They had the last of their children in 1822 and John remarried at Wolverhampton in 1836. I cannot find a death for Hannah Poyner between those dates. Similarly I cannot find their births , say 1770 to 1780.Any suggestions?  I have spent a lifetime spelling my name out so could perhaps her name be spelt wrongly on the burial entry? I do not know if this is suitable material to be included on your forum. Best wishes Terence Poyner

To check your theory of mis-spelt surname, and to provide some "negative input" (to save yours & others time & effort...), I scanned IGI for the period 1820-1840, deaths, all counties of England (not Wales etc...), for Hanna and all variants (Ann, Anna, Anne, etc.)

(1) There is a child, Anne POYNER, d. 1827, Shrewsbury, but apart from this, no name even remotely approximating POYNER.
(2) Nonetheless, for your "wild theories" page:
Hannah POULTER
Hanna PARKER
Hanna FOSTER
Ann LOINTON
Anne BOWDLER
(3)  Remains to try same exercise for Welsh counties.

(4) Failing that, perhaps she is in a parish or a period not covered by IGI ?
(5) Suggest you report back here for more input from specialists !

Good luck / mm

In reply to Terence: before July 1837 we search for baptisms and burials, not births and deaths. Next, the IGI does not record burials, except in passing, such as where a child can be seen dying shortly after baptism, and then only when the info is in the same, sequential register; and there were separate registers after 1812.

I have searched the SFHS Burials Index, which includes Claverley up to at least 1837, and using sequential dates, all covered parishes rather than forenames, and trying well-known variants of Poyner - a surname I know well. This throws up merely that last child Eleanor, who I note was buried 4 days after baptism in 1822 in Claverley. You can check coverage under Shop icon above, though I do not have the last 14,000 entries recently added.

If you are certain that the John who married in Woilverhampton is the same one then might I suggest that he and Hannah had moved into Staffs after 1822. If so you can try the Staffordshire Burials Index which by now should be well advanced. I do not have the latest contact address to hand. A Google search should reveal; or you could try the BMSGH site (the relevant and sponsoring FHS). See Links icon on the header of this page.

Hello Terence

You might like to bear in mind the possibility of some dodgy writing changing Poyner to Joyner or even Joiner.

Another but slighter possibility: I concluded a year or two ago that the surviving registers, as held at Archives, of Claverley had been carefully fair-copied in an even and consistent hand to replace an earlier version, but cannot recall if this applied to the period now in question. However it might be the case, and an item might have been omitted. In a last resort you could try for the Bishop's transcript. But as Claverley was part of the extra-diocesan Royal "peculiar" of Bridgnorth I do not know where after 1812 this might be. (Gwynne might know).

Thanks for all your efforts . I am going to Shropshire archives in October to have another go.

Hello Carol      Thank you for your entry of 24th inst. Could you please elaborate on what you may have found out ie are we talking about John Poyners possible baptism in Sheriffhales or Hannahs possible baptism or burial? John on the 1851 census has his P.O.B. as Brewood which is not far off (about 8 miles)

Best wishes Terence
