Hi, I was wondering if anyone could help trace my grandfather's family or any information on them, he never mentioned his family, never talked about his mom and dad, so I'm very curious. He did mention to my Nan that his family ran a pub in Hadley here's some information if anyone can find everything

My grandfather s name was John William LOCKLEY born November 1929, I think he spent most of his childhood around Hadley I'm not sure.

The pub was called the Green Dragon pub which was demolished in 1963 (I think) the last occupant to run that was James LOCKLEY and I don't know who he is, so be much appreciated if anyone knows anything on this pub or family .

Here's a link to the pub and the licensees who ran it and James locally was the last one

http://www.northeasttelfordpubs.co.uk/index/green-dragon

I've also got a link to a story from a man who spent his childhood round Hadley and he remembers the Green Dragon but he also stated that a woman ran it named Nancy LOCKLEY, but I've searched for this woman and found nothing. I'd be very interesting to find out, also he remembers I guy in a wheelchair and he was called crazy Jack LOCKLEY ( u might want to read the story to know about Jack) :/ the link to the story

Please if anyone can help I would appreciate that very much Thank you for reading.

Also I've looked up a marriage too which I think was in 1964 all it said was J W LOCKLEY (spouse surname BROOME), I don't think this is my grandad tho' as he met my Nan I think in the 60s, but he did tell my Nan he was in a marriage before but the woman was a drunk always would be nasty too him I think he walked out on her in the end then obviously met my nan.

Hello

The Shropshire Archives have a book listing Licensed Premises with details of the Licensee at various times. It was on the open shelves near the entrance when I last looked at it.

You will also be able to get some information on the name of the Licensee at various dates from Trade Directories like Kelly's. My 1941 edition has the following:-

Green Dragon Inn (Jas. LOCKLEY) 24 High Street, Hadley.

There is a good collection of trade directories at Shropshire Archives and you would be able to run through them quite quickly being arranged in place order with Private Residents and Commercial both in alphabetical order. You may be able to find copies of Shropshire Trade Directories in a large reference library near to where you live.

James LOCKLEY was landlord of the Green Dragon in the years mentioned. - 1934 until the late 1950s and was helped by his wife Nancy who kept it after his death and was there at the end in 1962/1963 when it was demolished and became a car park. I remember visiting Mrs LOCKLEY in later years at her large home on Castle Street where she took in a large amount if male lodgers, men who had no families. She was a saint, feeding them - And keeping them alive! I believe her daughter and son-in-law lived in a house adjacent. John LOCKLEY is not known to me and I have ever heard anyone talk about the man described in the piece by Old Scrote, but what do I know.

Please note a correction to my previous post . . .James LOCKLEY's wife was Bertha and the couple celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in 1961 - at the time, James was 72 and Bertha was 66. Mr LOCKLEY had worked as a breaksman at the Shropshire Iron Company based at nearby Trench. He is said to have worked there for 34 years, quite possible in days when pub landlords had a day job and his wife would run the pub at lunchtimes and he would take over evening duties. - remember that pub hours were limited in those days.

Ok, this is what I've got. I started with going back to the drawing board so to speak and researched your John William LOCKLEY parents . John William LOCKLEYs parents were ; William LOCKLEY/ Elizabeth PRITCHARD married 1917, Wellington, Salop so it's the William b. 1886 that's James' brother ! On a 1891 census living Hadley, came across parents John LOCKLEY b, 1851 wife Annie b. 1861 with children; John b. 1884, Mary Ann b. 1882, Richard b. 1877, James LOCKLEY ******b 1899 Wellington, Shropshire, and your William b 1886 Could this be the James that Owned the Pub? In 1891 James was a Farm Labourer, as was his Dad, in 1911, Dad John (now widowed) still Farm Lab but James was a Brakesman Canal. Maybe you could then search for his marriage. There are quite a few marr but not in welling Salop, tried Nancy but to no avail? 1911 census; Name: James LOCKLEY Age in 1911: 22 Estimated birth year: abt 1889 Gender: Male Birth Place: Hadley, Shropshire Civil Parish: Hadley Preston upon the Weald Moors Eyton upon the County/Island: Shropshire Country: England Street address: 5 Malt Shovel Yard, No 5 Hurley Brook Cottages, Leegomery Nr Wellington, Salop Marital Status: Single Occupation: Brakesman Canal Incline Boat Rails Registration district: Wellington Registration District Number: 355 Sub-registration district: Wellington ED, institution, or vessel: 14 Household schedule number: 69 Piece: 16302 Household Members: Name Age John LOCKLEY 62 John LOCKLEY 27 William LOCKLEY 24 James LOCKLEY 22 James Death? I’m interested in still looking for information on the Green Dragon Pub....The Green Dragon was situated on High Street, Hadley. The pub opened in 1826 closed in 1962, demolished 1963.
Now I have a James LOCKLEY who was licensee which is my Great Uncle he possibly could of married a Bertha? Nancy? Not sure, though also the LOCKLEY family did live in Hadley.
I haven’t had no messages from no one, I’ve also searched the internet but no luck.
I’m not just looking for information about the pub, I’m also interested in my Granddad’s mom her surname was PRITCHARD and she married a William my Great Granddad also William had a brother Richard and John, who was a cripple from birth, also James who ran the pub and Mary-Ann also the sister...my granddad fell out with his mom, we’re not sure why as he never talked about it. He would always say there’s nothing to say, so we have no information on the LOCKLEYs we have heard stories off my granddads mate who has passed since that my Granddad would go over the fields to the gypsy (traveller site) were not sure if the LOCKLEYs could have been gypsy's or not perhaps my Granddad’s mom was but who knows.

Also don’t know whether anyone would recall a dog getting killed at the old Hadley rail station, we heard my Granddad’s moms dog ran into an on-coming train in Hadley it was a white Alsatian.

I know now that a Frances Bertha PICKEN ran the Green Dragon pub with her husband James LOCKLEY, she had a child called Dorothy M LOCKLEY and Dorothy married a POWELL. So if there’s any relatives related to Dorothy or know any information on the pub between the sixties if anyone has any photos also of the LOCKLEY's that would be brilliant!!

Hi there,

In my family tree I have George Albert LOCKLEY marrying Minnie Louisa CLAYTON on 12-08-1942 Parish Church, Coalbrookdale, Shrops.  Maybe we have a connection.

My surname is PRITCHARD living in Australia with ancestry back to Wellington, High Ercall and several other areas in that region.  In particular I am seeking information on Elizabeth and Mary Ann (PRITCHARD-maiden name) and their descendants.

Mary Ann, born 1856 Mammerly Lane or Mosely Hole, Staffordshire and married Henry CLAYTON in Oct 1896.  They had at least one child, Minnie Louisa born Jan/March quarter 1900.  Moved to the High Ercall area, Shropshire between 1896 and 1901.

Elizabeth, born 1859 at Wolverhampton and unknown if she married or had children.  Believed to have moved to the High Ercall area, Shropshire between 1896 and 1901.

Their brother, Edward PRITCHARD is my great grandfather to which I have a lot of detail.  Moved to the High Ercall area, Shropshire in the 1880's

I look forward to any information you can provide with kind regards, Bob
