Hi,
My family lived In Marsh Lane Newport in 1900, however over the years this Lane seems to have disappeared. Does anyone know where Marsh Lane was to enable me to find it on a current street map.
Regards
Tony
Sherriffhales and Hinstock both have a Marsh Lane and they are quite near to Newport.
Hi Tony.
From what I have read Marsh Lane is an old track which has been replaced by Audley Avenue, which runs onto the High Street.
Hope this helps.
Dear Tony,
I agree with shrewsmido (above) and would add that the land which is currently occupied by a car park, off Stafford Street in Newport, was known until recent years (ie 1950s) as The Marshes.
A google search disclosed this, as Shrewsmido mentioned. Hope its of some help.
View of the lime trees and suburban villas of Avenue Road. This had previously been called 'Marsh Lane, because it led originally to Newport's 'Great Marsh', but was renamed to show its smarter status.

If you go to http://www.old-maps.co.uk and insert the postsode TF10 7EA this will give you historic maps dating back to 1880-82. By this time it would appear that the road has already been renamed Avenue Road, the trees marked on (as mentioned in the above extract) and it leads to the Gas Works...
Gives you an idea of the area though!
Best wishes, Penny.
and maybe this is just my lust for further information, but here is some information on Newport HS about the Great Marsh that might interest you..

Hello Tony
I can't see it on the 1900/2 1:2,500 Ordnance Survey map of Newport (Godfrey Edition) so I suggest you contact the Newport History Society.
When you look at their web site you will see a link on the right for 'The Marsh Fields' which may give you some clues.
