hello

im looking for information on my grandad Alfred Ernest Matthews he was born Sept 1898, not sure of birth place but my mum remembers seeing Liverpool on his birth cert, he served in the Coldstream Guards as a drummer during the first world war and maybe the K.S.L.I as well? there was an Alfred Matthews working as a butler at Downton Hall, Stanton Lacy near Ludlow around 1920, this may be him as he also worked at Walford Manor doing the same sort of thing, although I can find no record of this! there is a lance sergeant  Alfred Matthews serving in the 6th battalion of the Lincolnshire reg in the 2nd world war? grandad died 6th Jan 1963 aged 64 but before his death he worked at the creamery in Ruyton XI Towns, his address at the time being 3 Guigg Hill, Ruyton XI Towns

any help would be much appreciated

Kind regards

Shane Haynes

hello there, I have found the same info as yourself, unfortunatley the only info we have on him is from my mums memory, she remembers seeing a piece of paper regarding his baptism/christening and on it it said  it took place in liverpool, ive seen his death certificate and on it it says he was 64 when he died 6/4/1963 and she said his birthday was in november so nov 1898 is his dob, he and my nan never married and he only met up with her beteen 1945-1952, before that he lived down south, at some point he served in the cold stream guards as a drummer.

I am new to this and do appreciate and help thats available!

Thanks

Shane

A search of the 1901 Census does not find him: you can check here...

Also, a previous poster has asked for your grandmother's maiden name....

If he was born in Yorkshire then that is the only one that matches.

Date of registration does not match date of birth.

He may have been born in November the previous year.

The only way to tell is order the certificate.

I find it quite common for (as later known) second forenames to be omitted at registrations of birth; so perhaps Shane should review Alfreds only in FreeBMD. Note also an Ernest Alfred Matthews registered in Liverpool in latter 1890s.

Mr Dodd’s findings may well be the ones that Shane seeks (and the Colstream record seems spot on) but Yorkshire does not fit the reported tradition.

he wasnt born in yorkshire i dont for sure know where he was born just that he was baptised or christened in liverpool, his date of birth we know, Nov 1898, but ive always searched between 1897-1900 anyway, I favour Alfred Matthews born salford 1899, fits the closest to what we know, what would the best way to confirm either way?

also ive purchased a medal record for Alfred Ernest Matthews that was in the Coldstream Guards, it has more information but there are a lot of abreviations and military references that i wouldnt have a clue about (as well as terrible handwriting!) ould anybody be able to help me or point me in the right direction for help with that?

Much appreciated Shane
