On Saturday 21st March 2015, together with our secretary Chris Abram, I attended the website launch event of the Oswestry Cemetery Project where we were welcomed by the Mayor of Oswestry followed by four talks about the project.  In the afternoon we had a guided tour of the cemetery and were shown several particularly interesting grave stones which had been discovered during the project.

The first burial in the cemetery was on 26 Dec 1862 and it now contains in excess of 22,000 burials.  During the project about 8,000 gravestone images have been taken and will eventually be available on the web site.

Whilst you can search for names and obtain the grave reference details free of charge the web site is still being developed so at the present time the entries returned are not linked to the digital mapping which has been created or to the digital photographs which have been taken. These additional facilities will become available in due course.

Search Tip:  The surname field on the search screen does not accept wild card characters '?' and '*' but will search for the characters you enter anywhere in the surnames.  If you have a name which might end in 'ley' or 'ly' just enter it as far as the 'L' and leave off the 'e' and 'y'. The search will find both versions of the name.  Letters at the beginning can also be omitted.  To see the flexibility of this enter 'ken' (without the quotes) in the surname field and press search.

Since posting the information about the Oswestry Cemetery Project I have become aware of a strange anomaly on the site.

If you search for a single person from the Home screen then, when their entry comes up, clicking 'View' produces the burial entry details together with the grave location plotted on a Google aerial view but if you use the Advanced Search and then click view on the same person you only get the register transcript. The grave location does not display.

I have put a comment to this effect on the web site so that it can be attended to.
