I have some ancestors that were born in Shelton, Shropshire according to the Censuses that I have, but have been unable to locate any parish registers for there or Wellington as that is another place I'm looking at. Do they exist or are they only at Shropshire Archives, any information would be appreciated.

Thanks Robert Madden.

Both Shelton & Wellington PRs 1855-1900 are available on FMP(£).

Hello Robert

With regard to Shelton (now part of the outskirts of Shrewsbury) and usually known as Shelton and Oxon, you need to realise that the parish was not formed until 1855 from part of Shrewsbury St Chad, so it depends exactly what date you are looking for but if it was before 1855 then you should be looking for your relatives in St Chad's parish, Shrewsbury which you should be able to see on Find my Past (fee payable).  The Shelton and Oxon baptism on FmP start in mid 1855 and run through to 1900.

In Wellington the ancient parish church is All Saints so that is your main source before 1859 when the parish of Christ Church was created so again the exact date that you are researching determines which church, or churches, you need to search.  On FmP the Christ Church baptisms start in 1839 so you probably need to search the records for both churches to find your family and of course they may have moved from one to the other and back again over time.  By the way the All Saints baptism on FmP start in 1628.

If you are still unable to locate your family it might be worth putting their names and dates and places of birth / baptism on this message forum then one of our readers may manage to spot them for you.

Mike
