Hello all

I was wondering if anyone could throw some light on the following?

Relative to some entries in the 1600s and 1700's - for the Pickstock / Edgmond area.

IGI Family Search shows some BMD events as being recorded at Great Bolas when:

A There is a corresponding entry in the Edgmond Parish Register

B There is no corresponding  entry in the Edgmond Parish Register - mid 1600's christenings.

Does anyong know the reason why such events would be recorded on IGI as being at Great Bolas?

Kind regards

Ken

Hi Ken

Can you be more specific about the events in question, with examples? Are the events (baptisms / marriages / burials?) seemingly taking place in both Bolas and Edgmond on the same date? Or are we talking baptisms of what appear to be the same children in Bolas and Edgmond, on dates which are quite close to each other?

Hi Steve

Some of the events - mainly chrisenings are of the same event same person date etc - On IGI as at Great Bolas but also recorded in Edgmond Parish Register.

Some events are linked to a marriage - on IGI show the marriage at Great Bolas and the bride and groom being born in Great Bolas with about dates. The marriage was recoded in the Edgmond Parish Register and the bride and groom did live in Pickstock (part of Edgmond parish) if not then, which I thnk they did, then at least later in life.

Confused, you will be!!!

Confusions or conflicts such as these often arise because a private poster has been careless and has quoted the wrong parish. Has Ken checked which are real entries, iaken from the records? To repeat Steven's request, examples would assist us to say.

All IGI entries had following message; “

Record submitted by a member of the LDS Church. The record often shows the name of the individual and his or her relationship to a descendant, shown as the heir, family representative, or relative. The original records are not indexed, and you may have to look at the film frame-by-frame to find the information you want. A family group record for this couple may be in the Family Group Record Collection; Archive Section. (See the Family History Library Catalog for the film number.) These records are alphabetical by name of the father or husband”

Any 'records' on the IGI submitted by church members I would treat with caution. I mean no disrespect to the LDS itself but many of the member-submitted entries on the IGI are nothing more than guesswork, attempts to fill in gaps in the actual records, and others which are based on actual records are subject to errors in dates and/or locations. I suspect the latter is the problem here and I would take the PR extracts as being more a more reliable source than the member-submitted IGI records. Of course, the best source would be the actual PRS (or copies of them on fiche) if you can access them.

To add to Steve's comments, you will see that the LDS entries in the 1672 period say "Of Great Bolas". They are not saying that GB was the parish at which the ceremony took place; and it may be that the relevant researcher had reason to think that the family were at or were earlier or later at GB. Note also a date of death rather than burial. Dates of death are rarely recorded in registers at that period - this may come from one of those standard recording computer programmes that fail to distinguish death and burial.

There can be one advantage in these private entries when they are dealing with dates between 1st January and 24th March before 1752: the private entry may be a year later or earlier than the otherwise matching "real" entry; and this can indicate whether the year was, say 1672-3 or 1673-4.

A standard tip for looking out for private entries in IGI is that they are often (but not always) listed with lower case names.

Hi Steve and Martyn

Thank you both for your sound advice and comments.

I will certainly take this on board when reading the IGI records in future.

I have purchased a CD of the Edgmond Parish Register and hope to make an extended visit to the Lichfield Record Office in the near future where I will hopefully be able to get a fuller picture.

Again, many thanks.

Ken
