Hi

I am researching my great - grandmother Annie Pigg who was born in Minsterley circa 1890.  Her family resided in The Grove in 1891 and 1901 Census.

Annie's parents were Thomas and Emma (n eeeeeeeeeJacks) Pigg and her siblings were William born circa 1888, Margaret born circa 1889 and Lizzie born circa 1893.

If anyone has any connection with the Pigg's or Jacks' from Minsterley, I would love to hear from you.

Kind Regards

Hello. I cannot assist with the immediate antecedents of Thomas Pigg (whom I see in 1881 Census, aged 20, with his widowed mother Margaret). If not already done, you will need to find him in 1871 with his father (who from the age of the youngest child shown in 1881) had died only a few years before 1881.

However, I may in due course be able to assist. I descend from an Elizabeth Pigg, married in 1733 in Alberbury; and have some years ago studied what I think is the parent stock in Cardington. Complex.

In passing I seem to recall that bearers of the surname Pigg(e) married a Cock, a Pidgeon, a Woof and a Butcher.

Pottering in FreeBMD, It may be that the father of Thomas was George Pigg (who died in June quarter 1871 in Atcham District aged 45). His baptism is not in IGI,but then those for Westbury (of which Minsterley was in the 1820s a chapelry) are not covered after 1812. He MIGHT have been son of George, bap 1793 at Alberbury (which, if so, would tie into "my" line).

If I am right about George ad father, then his wife was Margaret Purslow(e). This family has been a major interest for me since 1958. She, I think, will be she born September quarter 1838 in Atcham District, and with her parents, aged 12, at 1851 Census. They were Thomas Purslow, one of several households at or near Wagbeach, Minsterley, and his wife Sarah Purslow. Thomas, regrettably is among a whole raft who have not (as far as I know) yet been affiliated, despite vast effort by many hands. Nor can Sarah's line be affiliated earlier; though all these groups must descend from the earlier, gentry family. More anon, as and when you have more info.

I ommitted to comment on the youngest child shown in 1881 Census, namely Margaret, aged 3.

If the theory as suggested above is correct it would mean that she was the mother's illegitimate child. In fact she was registered in December quarter 1877 as Margaret Bailey PIGG. It was often practice to include the natural father's surname as a forename in such circumstances.
