Hi, We are hoping that someone may be able to assist us. I am researching my wife`s ancestors, who came from Great Wollaston and Westbury. Her 2x great grandfather, Thomas Roberts was born in Great Wollaston, in Apr 1846. Her 2x great grandmother, Sarah (maiden name was Palmer) was born in Westbury in July 1850. I have found both on 1861, 1871, 1881, 1891 and 1901 Census. I found Sarah and her parents on 1851 Census. I am attempting to trace back one more generation on the Roberts side, and was wondering if anyone could offer some suggestions. I can not find the 1851 Census for the Great Wollaston area on Ancestry database. I have found facts that indicate that this Census does not exist anymore. Any help anyone may be able to provide would be appreciated. A personal visit to the archives is difficult, since we live in Canada.
Thanks!

Hi Mark,
Thanks for all the information. I was away for a few days and could not reply sooner. I appreciate your help in tracking down some ancestors. It certainly appears that David and Martha are who I am looking for. Are you related, or is Shropshire geneology an interest of yours?
I had overlooked the Bulthy reference in the 1911 Census for Thomas, nor had I seen David and Martha on the 1841 Census for Great Woolaston. I have now determined that Martha died in 1868, and David possibly remarried a much younger woman (named Mary), or the 1881 Census is incorrect. David is living with a Mary Roberts and 2 young children in 1881. Mary is indicated as his wife, but the age of Mary is also consistent with his daughter, Mary, born in 1837 to him and Martha. I will have to do more research about this.
I was wondering where you find the baptism details? Based on your reply that you live in Australia, it is obvious that these baptism records are online, do you have to pay for access?
Thanks again, looking forward to your reply,
Paul Wilson

My Dodd line comes from Shropshire so I have always had an interest in it. There are plenty of forums that cater for the Black Country or other parts of northern England but this site it fairly unique in catering for Shropshire specifically.
I have access to a huge number of resources but I try and quote the free ones when I can. I assume you are aware of the IGI.
http://www.familysearch.org/eng/search/frameset_search.asp
They have a new search engine that covers most of the information in IGI but not all.
I always use the new search engine first and if I can't find it, try the old IGI.
ReeREG is also worth a go.
For commercial sites that cover Shrophire, The Genealogist has by far the most extensive coverage. Much more than Ancestry or Find My Past. World VItal Records is pretty good as well.
Perhaps this Australian might be able to help....
Do you have the wedding certificate? What were Roberts parents names?
On the 1911 census, in his own handwriting he says he was born in the Bultha Albury parish.
I assume he means Bulthy near Alberbury, Bulthy is next to Wollaston.
I notice that all the farms he works on before getting married are in the Alberbury parish.
In that case, this is propbably his baptism.
