Following your question at tonights SFHS Zoom talk I had a thought ...
I had a similar problem to yours, in that I could not find a marriage record for a couple nor the birth records of their children, but I could find them in the Census recorded with the father's surname. I struck lucky when I discovered that the couple did not marry until after the husband's mother had died.So although his "wife" and the children had the father's surname on the Census, their children's birth's were regisrtered under the mother's (maiden) surname. Hope that makes sense!
