Hello all,

Have been on the hunt for the resting places of my greatx2 grandparents, they both died in Trefonen and Treflach areas of Shropshire. My greatx2 grandfather is listed on the Trefonen parish burial book  in 1875 along with his infant son a few years before in 1872 but I can't find the headstone in the church yard anywhere and they're not listed on the monumental inscriptions. Is there any way to get a hold of the actual church burial log with map? I contacted the church directly who said all paperwork is in Shrewsbury but it's not listed on the shropshire archives list of content!

Anyone has the same issue?

kind regards,

Hello

The Trefonen burial register at Shropshire Archives starts in 1821 and comes to 1990. There are also some transcripts of the gravestones (MI's) available from Shropshire FHS which you can purchase (see Shop above) or view at Shropshire Archives but I presume you have seen these. The problem is that many people did not have sufficient wealth to be able to purchase grave stones so only a minority of burials were followed by the erection of a stone.

I'm not quite sure what you mean by "the actual church burial log with map". The Burial Register was used to record each burial and in many cases was the only record. Generally they didn't need a plan because the man who dug the graves knew where everyone was buried however this created a major problem when he went to join his ancestors because then no-one knew where anyone was buried.

There is just a chance that the parish documents at Shropshire Archives may include some sort of grave layout but I wouldn't hold out too much hope. You need to visit the archives and establish exactly what is available.

You might also like to make a note of several burials before and after your relatives and then check if any of these people are listed in the MIs. If so it might give you a clue to the region of the churchyard that you should be looking.
