Hello to everyone.

I have eventually talked myself into tracing some family history and being a newbie to the hobby was looking for a little direction.

My late dad had a half brother, Eustace G Westbury who was killed at the beginning of WW2 (1940) shortly before his death his wife Margaret (Thomas) gave birth to a daughter Pauline A Westbury this was in 1938 either Oct, Nov, or Dec in Walsall, Staffordshire.
Now I believe after the death of Eustace, Margaret and Pauline move out of the Walsall area, the last contact with my dad was around 1943, this is the point the trail goes cold until 1961 when I have traces a marriage in Wellington Shropshire between a Pauline A Westbury and a John Gough in either Jun, Aug or Sept, from what I can tell the details about the brides parents fits what I know about them so I'm quite confident it is the correct Pauline.
This is were I'm stuck, there is a high possibility that Pauline is still alive as I cant find a record of death and she would only be 72 years old, I know she could have remarried and had a name change etc but I'm hopeful.
I have looked on the Shropshire archive website but I can't find any BMD records for anyone ???, must be doing something wrong.
Would anyone know if the Shropshire archive have an electoral register that I could look at or any idea of a way of tracing Pauline if she is still in the Shropshire area??. Any guidance would be very welcome.

Yes, Shropshire Archives holds many electoral rolls. To check if they have those that you might want: mail archives@shropshire.gov.uk. Note that some, latest are viewable only in the reading room, for which you will need a reader's ticket. (This is to keep out the "bouncer" types from tracing agencies with their mobile phones).

Another point that the webmaster would make: no details of living persons must be posted here.

Hi Dave

The death of a Pauline Gough, date of birth 30 July 1938, was registered at Walsall in July 1987 (volume 34, page 233, reg no 787). Given the place of death and the date of birth, and not withstanding the lack of a middle name/initial, might this be your Pauline? Although her birth was registered in the December quarter of 1938, the birth itself could have occurred in the previous quarter. It might be worth purchasing a copy of the certificate, which would show the place as well as the date of birth, maiden surname, plus the name and address of the person registering the death, among other useful details.

It's also worth bearing in mind that the coverage of the online death registration indexes ends at 2006, so details of England & Wales deaths from 2007 onwards will not be found online at (for example) Findmypast or Ancestry. I understand that the indexes from that date can however be viewed at the British Library.

Hi Dave,

Though the living relatives I have found have been by accident rather than design there does seem to be a trend towards finding living people.

Have you tried the living relatives section on Ancestry or the Lost Cousins site?
