I am researching the Family of Ada CLIVE b. 10 Jan 1876 in Wales and her husband John WILLIAMS marr.14 Oct 1897 in Hodnet. John died 14 Oct 1900 leaving 2 children, Nellie b.1898 and Jack WILLIAMS b. 1899 both in Hodnet, Shropshire. Nellie married Richard John BIRD and came to Australia. This is my lineage. I would like to learn more of my ancesters in Shropshire  Any info appreciated. Thank You.

I somehow feel that there is more information that you have not mentioned, such as where John died and his age at death. And surely you have obtained the marriage certificate (reference easily seen via FreeBMD), and should thus have the father's names.

Ada can be seen with her parents at Fen(n)s Lane, Bronington, Flints (just over the border from Whitchurch) in 1881 Census (for free via Family Search), while Ancestry (to which I have not needed to subscribe) ought to help with earlier Censuses for Clive.

I guess that her father John was youger brother of a Thomas Clive bap in 1836 in Hanmer parish (which contains Bronington), son of Joseph and Elizabeth (who might be the couple married in 1834 at Malpas, Cheshire, next north over the border).

Cheshire is poorly covered by IGI as is Hanmer before 1813, but its registers, or perhaps parts, are printed, copy at Shropshire Archives.

I see from the freely-accessible pages of Ancestry Joseph Clive in Flints in 1861 Census, born about 1800 in Cheshire. A search of my dic of the SFHS burials index shows all its entries for Clive to relate to the well-known landed family; and thus I feel that you should look for Clives in Cheshire. That will be hard-going with poor IGI. Any Wills can be searched (and ordered) online at Cheshire and Chester Record Office.

The bap of Joseph's wife (born 1808 in Shropshire) is no doubt that in that year in Whitchurch. Again, negative searches suggest that her family may have moved in from Cheshire. (There was another John Acton, a saddler in Wem, also married in 1808, in this case at next-door Loppington. He was buried at Wem 3.1.1822 aged 39).

(I have "deja vu all over again". Have you posted before?).

Thank you so much for the information you have suggested. You are quite right in that I have the marriage certificate of my Great grandparents

I have discovered that the name CLIVE has been recorded as CLIFF in some instances and this has helped in my research.

I shall follow through with your helpful advice on borders, towns etc.

Regards

Cheryl

I have just joined this site..maybe someone else is researching the same line or I am doubling up..sorry if this is the case..John WILLIAMS b23 Aug 1875, marr:Ada CLIVE 14 Oct 1897 in Hodnet, Salop, England, died 12 July 1900 in Salop Infirmary, Shrewsbury, England. 25 years of age of tumour of the mid chest cavity.

Ada and John seem to be connected to Styche Hall and Crabmill Farm but not sure in what capacity. I believe they were ag labs although my maternal grandmother, Nellie WILLIAMS(their daughter) recalls playing with Lady Magdelin at Hodnet and I have some old photos that show Ada and her 2nd husband, Charlie BERRY, in the grounds of a large building.

Thank you for your info..I shall look on Ancestry and Find My Past..

Regards Cheryl

If Cheryl can paste that photo somewhere accessible to us someone might identify the building. Webmaster might suggest the means.

Magdalen Lucy Herbert was born in 1864 and died unmarried in 1957. Her father, Rt Hon Sir Percy Egerton Herbert (1822-1876) lived from 1870 as tenant of his elder brother, the 3rd Earl of Powis at Styche Hall. Magdalen was “made up” to Lady in 1891 when her brother succeeded as Earl. (Herbert of course = originally Clive). She lived in 1949 at Rhyddallt, Oswestry.

I would recommend Flickr, and then post a link on here to the uploaded photo.
