I've been completing my family tree on the WYNNS of Ellesmere . I have found that John WYNN was the manager of the Kenwich estate and lived at the lodge. Is there any publications or info on these people. Thanks

Hello Robert

Am I correct in assuming that your family were living at Kenwick Lodge (not Kenwich) in the parish of Cockshutt sometime prior to 1900?  It would help us to help you if you gave some more detail of your family, including dates and where you have found information.

Trade Directories may well list John WYNN.  There is a good collection at Shropshire Archives in Shrewsbury and you can look at some on the Internet at the Historical Directories web site.

Click 'Find by keywords' then select Shropshire in the top location box.  Leave Decade and Name as 'All' and enter 'Cockshutt' (without quotes) in the keywords box. Click 'Find Directories' and then choose each one in turn that covers the correct period.  Click 'Next Hit' to move from one page to the next.

There is a publication 'Recollections of Cockshutt' by John Moore presumably written sometime after 1882 when he became head teacher at Cockshutt school. He died in 1946 and probably wrote the text late in life.

I think Shropshire Libraries have another publication about Cockshutt which contains many photographs but I don't have the title or date.

The book was called "Cockshutt and Petton Remembered: The Social Development of Cockshutt and Petton from the Ice Age" by Cockshutt Parish History Group published in 2007, however I cannot lay hand to my personal copy, to establish if it extended to much coverage for Kenwick.

Hi Thanks for that, I have listed the dates and names to see if anything relates to any information.

John WYNN b 1801 d 1861 Lived at the Lodge.

Henry WYNN b 1840 d 1892

I have some very vague information that they are related to Sir John WYNN of Gwydier, but I don't know how to prove this.

Thanks for you help

Do you have a Hannah R Wynn who married William John Roberts in 1888 in your family tree? I am researching the Roberts side of my family. I believe his brother Richard is my Great grandfather. Any info would be helpful?

Hi Robert,

I too am researching my family - which may in turn lie with the Wynn's of Ellesmere, Cockshutt and Lyneal.

My descent comes from a John Wynn b.1725 and d.1810, who had a wife Mary, a daughter Sarah, sons named Mathew and William as well as many other children. All descendants of my 5th Great Grandfather Thomas Wynn son of the aforementioned John, were all told of relation to Llywelyn the Great and of descent from the Gwydir Family.

I have recently found on FindMyPast a Will of a John Wynn of Cockshutt dated 1794 which also bears as his wife Mary, a daughter Sarah and two sons named as Mathew and William suggesting they may be one and the same. This Will mentions William being left the Farm at Cockshutt solely so it could be that William was your ancestor?

If you are still actively watching here, do you want me to put the link to said documents in this forum? Bearing in mind the link is likely blocked as pay to see content as I have a FindMyPast Account.

Regards,

Callum Wynne.
