Subject - "Genealogy and Genetics"
Speaker - Geoff Swinfield
Geoff Swinfield has been a professional researcher for more than 30 years. Since 1999, he has run his own genealogical company, Geoff Swinfield Genealogical Services.
He has a Ph.D. in genetics and has used this training to apply genealogical research to the study of families at risk from genetic diseases. He lectures on DNA Tests for Family Historians and, in 2008/9, he lead a joint research project between Moorfields Eye Hospital and the Society and Genealogists into a hereditary form of glaucoma.
Genealogy and Genetics
Much has been written about DNA tests. Which parts of the genetic material and its inherited variation can be tested? What commercial products are available and how should the results be interpreted? What do they tell the family historian about their ancestry discovered from genealogical sources? Are we likely to be related to others with the same surname even if there is no documentary evidence? This talk will tell you what you can (and can’t) infer and discover from these tests.
