Monthly talk and AGM - Mary McKenzie: 30 years at Shropshire Archives

Preceding the talk by Mary our AGM will be held, further details will be available in the December journal.

Mary, the recently retired Archives Manager at Shropshire Archives will then join us to talk about her experiences over 30 years working in the archives. As well as reflecting on her own experiences Mary would also be interested to discuss the experiences of users of the Archives in Shropshire or elsewhere. 

Monthly talk - Martin Wood: Hollywood came to Shrewsbury

Martin, the Shrewsbury town crier, will join us to talk about the time Hollywood came to Shrewsbury. His talk entitled “God Bless Us Every One” will review the time that Hollywood came to Shrewsbury to film the Christmas classic, “a Christmas Carol” and his role in it.

Monthly talk - Ann Simcock: The 1939 Register

Ann will join us to talk about the 1939 Register. In this talk Ann will look at the background to the 1939 Register and how it was organised. Ann will also consider some of the problems associated with the Register and suggest ways that it can be a basis to broaden research into ancestors in the Second World War. 

Monthly talk - Brian Atkins: A postal history of Shropshire

Brian will join us to talk about the Postal History of Shropshire from Tudor times to the present day. This is the third time that Brian has kindly agreed to reschedule this talk. We’ll keep our fingers crossed that no pandemics, technical glitches or adverse weather conditions spoil the evening.

Monthly talk - Rosie Morris: "Pride of the village" - our ancestors and the funeral customs of Virgins' Crowns

Rosie will join us to talk about the funeral custom of Virgins’ Crowns. These were awarded to special people of mainly rural villages. They were unmarried and of a chaste character, and regularly attended church. Predominately for females although bachelor crowns do exist. They were constructed from a wood

David will join us to talk about the work of the Royal Observer Corps in peace and war with an emphasis on Shropshire.

As the situation with Covid-19 and the impact on being able to hold our monthly meetings at the normal location in Cross Houses continues to be uncertain the SFHS committee has decided that talks planned through to June 2021 will take place using Zoom. 

Access to the meeting is only available to members. The meeting will be available to join from 19:15 (local time).

Graham will join us to talk about how he discovered his birth parents after 40 years of research. This talk will be preceded by the Annual General Meeting which has been postponed from January 2021.

Dr George Nash will join us to talk about monumental prehistoric graffiti associated with death, burial and ritual.

Graham will join us to talk about how a group of volunteers worked on clearing the site of the Red Church at Jackfield, the resting place of wealthy barge owners, tile makers and other industrialists.
