A new event for the organisers and therefore for Shropshire Family History Society, who will be having a stand at the event, with a team of volunteer helpers, computers and books. They will also be selling a selection of Local Interest Books and Maps, some Family History Books and our own CDs. We look forward to catching up with London & South-East members old and new.

Col (Retd) David Thornycroft OBE was educated at Shrewsbury School and Trinity College, Oxford, where he took a History degree. He served for 34 years as an officer in The Black Watch. Now that he is retired, he combines those two interests by reading (a lot), and writing and lecturing (a little), mostly about military history.

Using contemporary sources and illustrations we tell the story of how the efforts of two patriotic and well organised railway contractors and their navvies came to the rescue of the British Army bogged down in the Crimea, taking just three months to build a railway from the coast to Sevastopol in the Spring of 1855.

This talk covers the short life of Flt Lt Eric Lock DSO DFC and Bar. Born Bayston Hill to a farming family, he went on to become Britain’s highest scoring Battle of Britain Pilot before being lost on active service.
