Worthen, All Saints

Lychgate of Worthen church

This was constructed in the 1st decade of the 20thC. It was made in memory of Lancelot Lee, who died on Sept 5 1902, and who for 28 years had been rector of the parish. It was made by Samuel Speake (1837-1914), a carpenter who was born in Worthen and who lived there most of his life, at Brook Cottage, opposite the brook. It would probably have been made with the help of his son Jack, who was also a skilled carver and woodworker. The small gate to the left of the lychgate has since been replaced, and its replacement is dedicated to Mr T Embrey, headmaster of Worthen school and church organist from 1938-90.
