My second great grandmother was Mary HULME born 13th March 1821, lived in St Alkmunds Place. Her father William HULME born 1788 died 9th July 1849 lived in Ox Lane. William's father was John HULME who was buried at St Mary's 14th Jan 1828. I am coming to Shrewsbury on 11th August and would like any information on HULME family. Thank you.

Hello Christine

I had a good look at your posting when it first appeared but couldn't find any connection with my own HULME family.  My ancestors didn't move from Cheshire to Shropshire until the mid 1880's.

I noted that your William HULME who died in 1849 was a hair dresser so this might give you one or two possible chances of finding him in records.  It might be worth trying local Voters Registers to see if he appears and also local Trade Directories to see if his business is listed.  There is just a chance that he might have left a Will when he died.  If so it will be at the Lichfield Record Office and I think there may be a microfilm copy of the index at Shropshire Archives.

Many years ago I went through all the UK telephone directories counting how many instances of the surname HULME there were in each and then worked them out in part per million to get an idea of where the name appeared most.  The highest concentration was in north Staffordshire (Stoke on Trent particularly) then Cheshire and south Lancashire.  With your William dying just before the 1851 census it is difficult to guess where that family group may have originated so it will need quite a lot of work.

Continuing the analysis of where the HULME surname appears most, at the time of the 1881 census Cheshire was probably the centre for the name, especially in the Altrincham area and again in north Staffordshire especially in the Leek area.  This information is taken from Steven Archer's Surname Atlas which is based on the data from the 1881 census.
