Does this ring any bells with anyone? He was my sister-in-law's grandfather, but appears with two siblings on the 1841 census in Wombridge as William JONES, but on later censuses as William Mace AKA Jones.
Two William MACEs appear in the criminal records, one on which the dates match with this one, who got 12 months in Shropshire and an earlier one who got a death sentence in Cheshire. I'm wondering whether a ready made family without parents suddenly appeared in Wombridge as the one who was sentenced to death was in court a year after the Wombridge one was born.
