Hello

Alfred Merrick born 1869 in Shrewsbury is on Ancestry on the 1871 & 1881 census. He is on the 1871 age 2 living with his mother Ellen, down as a laundress and a widow, with siblings Elizabeth and William, both scholars. They were living in Pipe Street, in the parish of St Julians, and all give Shrewsbury as place of birth.

On the 1881 census he is a scholar aged 12 living with his mother Ellen and sister Elizabeth who is working at a Thread mill. His mother is still laundress and widow. They still live in Pipe Street.

I would suggest that your first step should be to obtain his birth certificate and find out if his father's name is recorded. If so, you could trace his father and his marriage to Ellen.

The 1881 is available free on Family Search. I have looked at a few military records but it is difficult to pin one down to your Alfred without a bit more info.

Hope this helps. Hazel
