Can anybody help me identify the location of this photo?

The inscription seems to read "on the Dom steps, 1922). The photo shows my great grandfather Arthur Young, with his daughter and grandson. In 1922 Arthur lived in Meole Brace, Shrewsbury, the daughter probably lived in Portsmouth. Portsmouth is my home town, and I am not aware of anywhere known as the Dom. I am assuming the photo was taken in Shrewsbury but I could well be wrong about that.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

John

Hello John

I might be wide of the mark but did the child go to a boarding school?  The reason I ask is because I wonder if the text at the bottom reads, "On the DORM steps, 1922".

Hi John,

Did your family have any connection with Germany? 'Dom' in German means cathedral I think, so we are looking at them standing on the cathedral steps--in this country or abroad?

Hello John,

My thoughts coincide with John Spragg's and I wondered if it might be one of the west front doors of Cologne cathedral " Hohe Domkirche St Petrus".  We caused damage to the building during WW2, but present day shots of the doors (and surrounding statues on plinths) look convincingly similar.  May be a wild guess, but your photo does look like a Cathedral entrance.

Gentleman

I think you could be right. The daughter in the photo married an army man (at Meole Brace). I was told they were stationed in Germany after the war. My grandmother went to Germany with them, but I was not aware my great grandfather ever went out there.

I also thought the building had the look of a Cathedral or church, so I think a cathedral in Germany is a distinct possibility.

Thanks for your help.

John
