The eldest son, born in 1873 at Isle Park, Bicton (then sometimes still classified as part of St Chad's, Shrewsbury), of one of my great-granfathers is thought to have settled in Australia, and seemingly by the date of the latter's Will in 1910, possibly by 1901.

None of my kin have ever had any further knowledge of him, and I have never investiagated the availability of appropriate Australian records.

Some guidance would be appreciated.

If Mark (Dodd) might be happy to give some such I wonder if he could e-mail his own e-address to webmaster@sfhs.org.uk. Graham (who in fact lives close by me) could then.pass it on.

Martyn Freeth.

The name, unhelpfully, was William JONES.

Not as many William Jones arriving in OZ as I thought. As long as I can find what city he landed in we should be able to track him.

Most kind, Mark, but am not expecting you to research directly for me. Just a query as to appropriate online resources on immigration. (I have other kin in other families to find at some point).

But, just to add, William's date of birth, per the family bible, was 23.12.1873; and in 1881 Census his place of birth was given as "Rossall", which is also nearbyin Bicton, but might also mean "Isle of Rossall" which is the whole loop in the River Severn in which is Isle Park (the northernmost point of that river).

Ancestry has a badly transcribed Birth, Death and Marriage for Australia.

You should should be able to search for any births by using the fathers forename as a filter.

Depending on the state, you can use the mother's forname as well.

You should be able to search for any death by using the fathers full name as a filter.

If you had access to the Digger databases then the transcription is far more accurate and you can search using the full names of the parents for births and deaths. The Digger databases are not online but nearly all libraries in Australia hold them and I suppose some genealogical societies in the UK would have them.

Ancestry have fairly good shipping records into Australia as well. I usually use the Find My Past shipping records in combination with those on Ancestry.

Ancestry have the electoral roles up to 1980 which are excellent for tracking people.

I also use World Vital Records when researching Australia.
