I have reached a stop in my research at John Barratt (Barrat) who married Elizabeth Bridgen in Claverley 6th October 1799.  They had a son William in Worfield 1800/1801.  I live in Lancashire and am a member of LFH&HS so do not have access to Shropshire Archives.  Any information would be gratefully appreciated.

As an existing member of a family history society you will no doubt appreciate that research based purely on the IGI is quite unsound. (I have in the past made a number of trips to Preston and Liverpool in pursuit of a quarter of Lancashire ancestry).

Thus, unless a reader here has already studied this family you ought to have the original entry for that 1799 marriage checked out - for parishes of residence, marital status, whether parental consent was needed, witnesses (and whether they were, from nearby entries, "regulars") and whether there is a licence (or, correctly, bond and allegations) to be seen.

You can ask Shropshire Archives - e-mail: archives@shropshire.gov.uk . Likely fee £5-00.

It might be a good investment to buy at least the SFHS Burials Index on cd. See the Shop icon for this and other publications - and check current coverage for your purposes.

Note also the possibilty of movement across the nearby border with Staffordshire. Indeed John might be he baptised at Pattingham, father, William. Note also a "black hole" in the registers of Ryton (not Ruyton) not far from Claverley. You can download lists of holdings of registers held at Shropshire Archives from the Shropshire Council website.
