The contact addressfor the society is not  is not valid. .http://www.sfhs.org.uk/about-us/committee and redirects back to the home page.I think I have reached the end of the line in trying to find out any more about my ancestor born 1809/10 Shrewsbury. I want to find out more about Bishops Transcripts and where they can be found. For over 20 years I have posted to many generic and one name forums and recently joined ancestry.com and a few other sites to look again for any connections. He is not on IGI. I need to complete my book and wondered how I could access Bishops transcripts for Shrewsbury which seems to be the last resort for this period.Or are all the parish records supposed to be on IGI or does the society have any and if so do they offer a research service.Help will be appreciated.

Hello Iris

I'm not sure where you found the link you pasted into the top of your message but the current address for the committee can be found by going to 'About us' (top left above) then select 'Committee and other key volunteers'.

The original Bishops Transcripts are stored at the Diocesan Archives, so for Shrewsbury and north Shropshire this means Lichfield Record Office and for south Shropshire this means Hereford Archives

(NOTE: Hereford Archives have restricted opening times for the remainder of 2013 whilst they prepare to move into new premises in 2014)

I believe Shropshire Archives have microfilm copies of the Lichfield B.Ts. but it might be a good idea to check they have what you want before making a visit.

There are some B.Ts. on the Family Search web site.  To check whether they have what you want select 'Search' from the page above then select 'Catalog' (US spelling) from the top menu bar. Enter 'Shrewsbury' in the place name box then select 'England, Shropshire, Shrewsbury' from the options which come up. (Note this is their standard format for listing place names.) Click the blue 'Search' button and click on 'Church Records (46)' which will produce a list of B.Ts. which have been filmed.

Thank you Mike

I got the link from the bottom of this page under “contact us”. Thank you for the link and directions on how to use the catalogue. This looks like the new  Family Search website which was not available when I looked a few months ago.

Shropshire Archives: I won’t be making a visit – I am in Australia although I would love to be there! Also I am no longer able to travel to the centre to look at records. Bishops transcripts are a bit late for me.  However I notice that these records and an 1821 census, that I haven’t seen, are copies of   what is held in the Shropshire County Records Office.  I may be able to find his father.

I see that the record office has various levels of research services so I think this maybe my last resort.

I know my fellow  was born in Shrewsbury 1809/10 (1851 census) but after that he moved around. I have marriage 1840, census both 1841 and 1851. Transportation records and everything after that.

His father remains a mystery. I am beginning to think he was also transported but to another part of the country!!!

Thank you for your reply

Kind regards

Hello Iris

I have notified the Webmaster that the 'Contact' link needs updating - thank you for pointing out the problem.

If you want research done at Shropshire Archives it is much cheaper to employ a local researcher rather than use the research facility offered by the archives.  The Shropshire FHS Journal has an advert for Tree-Tracers who can be contacted at tree-tracers (at) blueyonder.co.uk (Change the (at) to @ and remove the spaces).

Hello Mike, Thank you for your reply. I am not getting any notifications that I have an answer. Is this an option?                                                                                                                                                                   Thank you, I will look for a researcher on that site.  The father's name is George BUFTON and he is a soap boiler. This is William's occupation too. This occupation is useful because it is not common. Before there were so many databases I got a researcher to get the 1851 census for Pentonville prison and it was the occupation that made it easier to identify him because it only gave initials, albeit the date was easy to sort inmates. Also the birthplace he gave in Pentonville was credible because he had no reason to lie. I can't find anything on the 1841 census as a George being "head of the family" and I don't expect he would have any children living at home at this time. His son William was age 31 so siblings would have left home no doubt. That is why the 1821 census might be better but I have never seen a 1821 census. In fact didn't know they existed. The only family that comes close is BAFTON but this isn't a spelling mistake as it has been used repeatedly and mine is definitely BUFTON and he is a Protestant where the others are Congregational - Baptist. His age could slip him in between other siblings. Over the years I have tried all sorts of variations of the spelling. Having said that the whole family was listed in the christenings so he should have been there if he was a family member. The new census online database is useless as I had to correct all the spellings I found for the same family because I have had the original census since my trip to UK in 1994.   I think you gave me some assistance about his occupation a few years back.                                                    Kind regards

Hello Iris

Unfortunately this Message Forum is not designed to send out emails when replies are posted to messages.  You need to keep looking. When a reply is received the message comes back to the top of the list so it is easy to see if you have received a reply.

As a general rule it is only from 1841 that census returns survive but there are odd ones for particular places between 1801 and 1831.  I presume you have seen reference to the 1821 census for Wellington but unfortunately that doesn't include anyone by the name of BUFTON.

Hi Mike

I thought it was a census for Shropshire but if you say it is Wellington and have had a look then that is the end of the line for me.  The information I saw was Shrewsbury Shropshire  1821 P250/B/52-53.          Thank you for looking. Is it the same census? regards

Hello Iris

There is some 1821 census information for the three Shrewsbury parishes: Holy Cross & St Giles, St Chad and St Mary but I have never seen it so have no idea what each one contains.  As this is only available at Shropshire Archives as far as I know you will need to get someone to search them for you.

The reference starting P250 refers to Shrewsbury: Holy Cross parish.

Thanks Mike

I have taken your advice and now waiting for a researcher to get back to me.

Hello Iris,

I'm new here and while browsing the site saw the name "Bufton" in your posts.  It may be no connection, but, there is a guy at Herefordshire Family History Society --Phil Bufton.  He may not be connected with your Bufton Family --but surely worth a contact--he may well have info for you.   Good luck!

Have you ruled out the George Bufton born in 1804 (bap at St. Chads)? My gg grandfather lied about his age to the tune of 6 years!
