Barb - this query seems to have been ongoing since 2007 judging by posts on other message boards such as RootsChat. Not sure if that was yourself or another descendant of James.

Looking for James Bullock born abt 1821 in Broseley on census records shows that he married Emma (also from Broseley) by 1841 and that the couple's first child (or at least the first child that survived to 1841), named Edwin, was born around 1840. FamilySearch shows the marriage of James Bullock (father Thos. Bagley) to Emma Speak (father Joseph Speak) at Dawley on 21 May 1838. This information (most likely the basis for James' father being shown as Thomas Bagley on the family trees at Ancestry) will have been transcribed by the LDS from the Dawley marriage register. (I originally explained here how you could view or obtain a copy of the register entry to check for accuracy, but the thread I've linked to above confirms the familySearch transcription).

Family trees created on Ancestry by subscribers show that James Bullock was baptised at St Alkmund in Shrewsbury on 21 Sep 1817 and that his mother was named in the record of that event as Susanna Bullock; this information may also have been taken from FamilySearch. This baptism ties in with the age of 44 given for James on the 1861 census, but not with the ages of 31 given in 1851 and 50 given in 1871. As it only gives the mother's name it suggests a birth out of wedlock although occasionally it means that the father had died; checking the original register entry would clarify things (although the odds favour the birth out of wedlock, especially given the marriage record showing a father with a different surname).

Thanks Steve

That is what I thought (born out of wedlock) but on one family history on Ancestry, it states there was another possible father, only it doesn't name him.

I have the information about his marriage to Emma Speak and their child I am descended from is James Bullock jnr born 16th Sept 1845 in Broseley Wood, I am also searching for his death as it seems he may have returned to Shropshire. He was on the 1901 census in Staffordshire with his family( my grandfather his son being one of them) but he had died before the 1911 census it states Mary Jane his wife widowed.

I am grateful for your information

If anyone is interested i have now recieved the marriage certificate of James Bullock and Emma Speak and Thomas Bagley is recorded as his father, the father of Emma is Joseph ( this we already knew ).

It was at Dawley parish church on 21st May 1838 in the presence of Charley Harory ?and Rebecca Pugh.

The only birth for James Bullock with his mother being Susannah is In Shrewsbury as Steve said.

Thank you again for your help
