I am researching 'CLUDDE' or 'CLUDD' of Orlestone - anything.

Also looking for Ludovici  CROWTHER - born in about 1530

If anyone can assist I would be grateful.

I am happy to help as well. I have researching my tree for about 6 years.

Cheers'

Hello Kerry

The first thing to sort out is the place that your family came from. The only place called 'Orlestone' that I can find is in Kent, about 200 miles (320 km) from Shropshire.

We do have a place called 'Orleton' a short distance west of Wellington in Shropshire. What is your source for the place name? If it was something like the census it would help if you gave us the page reference (Piece No, Folio No and Page No) so we can look at it.

I can't help wondering if CLUDD & CLUDDE are a corruption of some other name because by the time of the 1881 census, in the whole of England & Wales, there were only two people with the surname CLUDD and they were living in the Shifnal area of east Shropshire. In addition there was just one person named CLUDDE who was living in the Wellington area of Shropshire. How many generations of CLUDD(E) have you traced?

Mike and Kerry,

Two thoughts on place names in the Wellington area:

1) "Orlestone" might also be Arleston (east of Orleton), depending on how you say it,

2) There are a Cluddley and a Clotley immediately to the south of Orleton Hall where the B 5061 intersects the M54/A5

Richard Cludde had land in Wrockwardine and paid the 1525 Lay Subsidy which is a similar area.

Hi Everyone and thanks for your replies !

I am not sure if my comment came through so her is a short version -

I have been researching and found that the Cluddes (also known as Cludd, and Clud, before the 1500's) were primarily in Shropshire in the Orleton, Wellington and Wrockwardine areas. Richard Cludde who had lands in these areas was probably my 15th great grandfather it seems. I say that as I am not done with verifying as finding dates is sometimes difficult for me living in Australia. Online resources are pretty great, but Parish records can be like Gold and are usually pretty accurate. I am sure you all will agree.

Richard (Cludde) married an Elizabeth Steventon close to 1500. They had many children, one of whom a daughter Elizabeth married Roger Fox (sometimes of 'Pedwardine?) The Fox family are also of Shropshire and my group are particularly in the stoke Lacy and Greete areas. I have them for about 6 generations to another Elizabeth(Fox) (daughter of Edward Fox of Greete) who married into the Whichcote family also of Salop, Shropshire. I seem to have a good whack of Shropshire blood between 1600 - 1400's. Most of my lines are from the British Isles as close in as my Grandfather who was born in London. But as yet ....No Convicts !!

My interest right now is with Richard Cluddes father Thomas Cludde who married Rose Aston of the Aston family of Tixall, Staffordshire. Thomas' father William(or possibly Thomas) married Maria Corbet, whose father Thomas Corbet (of Leigh?) married Jana Kynaston of Hordley.....very interesting and becoming even more so. But must keep seaching for the truth and RECORDS. Will keep you posted..

If I can help anyone please let meknow through this forum.

All the very best smileyKerry

Hi Ken,

Sorry about the late response.

Thanks so much for the Wrockwardin site. Very interesting and quite useful.

Shropshire is a long way from Western Australia !

Kind Regards,

Kerry
